Iga Swiatek, a wild card, from New Jersey, advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open on Friday. Iga started off the evening with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jule Niemeier. The match was in the third set and the match ended with a tiebreaker. With a win in the tiebreaker, Iga will advance to play second-seeded Jennifer Brady from Florida in the quarterfinals. Iga is 5-2 on the year, including the victories over Niemeier (11-0, 10-0). She is the third seed in the women’s draw in the U.S. Open, having been seeded 4th in both 2011 and 2012. Iga has defeated No. 2 seed Elena Vesnina, No. 2 seed Angelique Kerber, No. 3 seed Julia Goerges and No. 2 seed Francesca Schiavone.
