Kanye West’s Twitter bio is now #FreeKanyeWest

Holocaust Museum LA invited Kanye West to a private tour. Now it’s target of antisemitic attacks

Just a day after the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum invited Kanye West to a private tour for free, a Twitter user claiming that she is Jewish, used the hashtag #FreeKanyeWest to criticize the museum as an “antisemitic hate museum”.

The user, who also goes by @PhenomenalPlushie, asked the Museum Society of Los Angeles, which had invited West to its annual gala fundraising event, “Why would you invite hate? Why would you promote antisemitic hate when you are a Jewish museum? Why would you promote this?

At which point, she changed her Twitter bio to read “#FreeKanyeWest”.

The Museum Society, which was founded by Holocaust survivors, then issued a statement condemning the boycott. And the hashtag “#FreeKanyeWest” has since taken on a new life:

The Museum Society noted that in this case, the act of inviting hate was promoting the museum itself, and encouraging visitors to ask questions about it.

The museum made the decision to invite West to the event after receiving a request from the rapper’s representative.

At issue, as the museum noted, is West’s support for the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, which has been credited with pressuring Israel to halt trade with several American companies, including Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, PepsiCo and Visa.

The museum’s founder, James Stern, wrote in a Facebook post on Friday:

“I have had to fight against the antisemitism that runs rampant in the world. I am the victim of an antisemitic hate campaign. When I was invited to visit the Los Angeles Holocaust
