New York Road Runners Honor Abdi Abdirahman

A Last Competitive New York Marathon for Abdi Abdirahman

The New York Road Runners, in agreement with the U.S. Olympic Committee, are organizing a second-half marathon for Abdi Abdirahman who in 2015 finished 9th in the overall New York City Marathon. He has run the Half-Marathon twice in 2017.

It is unclear how the New York Road Runners, in agreement with the U.S. Olympic Committee will choose to honor Abdi Abdirahman. If they choose to award him with an honor like a Medal of Courage, which is usually done by the International Association of Athletics Federations, this could be a first for the New York Road Runners.

When Abdi Abdirahman was injured during the 2015 New York City Marathon, some thought New York Road Runners was going to honor him with a New York City Marathon, but New York Road Runners instead chose to honor the runners who were with him during that time.

Abdi has run several races with New York Road Runners in the past, including the 2015 Boston Marathon where he finished 25th and 2017 Boston Marathon where he finished 26th.

Abdi’s injury-riddled 2015 in New York City was not the first time he suffered this type of injury. In 2016, while running in Chicago, Abdi ran into a car. This resulted in a broken pelvis and nerve damage that caused him to miss the 2017 New York City Marathon.

As Abdi is an Olympian, he has been invited to run in the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Abdi Abdirahman has expressed interest in winning the Olympic Games in 2020, which would give him a chance to beat the 2016 Olympic Games champion Kenenisa Bekele.
