The Church of All Worlds, the Trolls

Her allegations brought down megachurch pastor Bruxy Cavey. Then the anonymous trolls came for her.

Sandy Soter, a self-described “faith healer” or “spiritual counselor,” is known as one of the most successful female healers in the United States. She runs a self-published ministry known the Church of All Worlds, a place of healing for people who are grieving and struggling. Her biggest clients have been pregnant women and rape victims who feel stuck in their bodies.

While the Church of All Worlds has been around since 2015, the New York Times reported last year that the church’s founder, Soter, has “become one of the most notorious victims of a Twitter harassment campaign,” which involved a team of Internet trolls. Among the most aggressive critics, the Times found, is the founder, Bruxy Cavey, and his wife, who ran the church. Cavey is the pastor and president of the Church of Earth, the Times reports.

“Since then, Sandy Soter has been a target for harassment on Twitter, YouTube, and elsewhere,” the Times wrote. “The church’s most visible critics have included members of Congress, a number of celebrities, politicians, and other people who have used social media to attack her, and two presidents.”

Soter, who lives in Nashville, Tenn., was responding to a New York Times article last fall about a woman named Katie Hill in which she had been accused of making anti-Semitic remarks while protesting at the March for Israel last year. Soter posted a response on her Facebook page, saying:

I’m here to talk about the way of the world, the way of the world here. This is very important. I am a spiritual, humanist and naturalist. I work in the natural world. I know and honor the human world from an organic perspective. My spiritual, humanistic and naturalist perspective is in full alignment with that in every way.

Then there were the trolls. To say they came out of the woodwork, or that they were organized groups of people, is stretching the truth. These were a few of the ones that have gotten more attention in the press:
