The Liberals’ Child Care Subsidies Are based on the federally funded Ontario Child Tax Benefit

Ontario weakened its $10-a-day child care funding rules. Now the federal government is demanding answers. And the people are demanding answers.

Last weekend, the City of Toronto and Liberal MPP Peter Tabuns issued a news release saying their own MPP had voted against giving Ontario parents more money for child care. In fact, Mr Tabuns had voted against the Liberal government’s $10-a-day child care funding rules, and, in so doing, voted against the Liberals’ own policy for a $6-a-day child care subsidy on top of the current $6.58-a-day subsidy and $2.75-a-day subsidy.

The Liberals’ own child care subsidies, as they currently stand, are based on the federally funded Ontario Child Tax Benefit (OTB). The Liberals introduced their child care subsidy legislation based on the federally funded Ontario Child Tax Benefit. The current $6.58 subsidy is based on income taxes of those who receive the benefit. So, those on low or no income actually pay no income tax.
