The US Open Finals Draw

Novak Djokovic withdraws from the US Open. He is unvaccinated against Covid-19 and not allowed to receive a visa and enter the country. Therefore, his attendance at the tournament will be suspended.

As a result, Serb world number one Dinara Safina will play her first match at the event, having previously won the title 11 times. Also, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep have agreed to play at the tournament, as will defending champion Simona.

The match-up between Rafael Nadal and Jurgen Melzer

The final was eventually played tomorrow. Rafael Nadal will face Jurgen Melzer in the final, with the winner receiving an automatic ticket to the final at the French Open. The winner of the match will also be guaranteed a spot at the French Open.

The draw was held this morning at the Mall of America. This was the final event before the US Open begins their tournament on 27th March.

Nadal will play against a qualifier in one of the opening two rounds for a spot in the semis or the final, depending on the result of his opponent. If he wins, he will play either Dominic Thiem or Daniil Medvedev. If he loses, he will play either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Thiem has made great progress in the last year, winning the Dubai title and finishing first in Madrid in the Davis Cup. He is likely to stay with the claycourt circuit for at least the 2016 season.

Dolgopolov is back from injury, having not played since the final of the Rotterdam Masters last year, where he defeated Roger Federer in three sets. After his injury he had lost his form. The Russian is returning to the circuit after missing the last two Grand Slams.

Medvedev has reached the final of the Rotterdam Masters, and he too is likely to go to the claycourt. Medvedev
